Whale defecation good fertiliser for fisheries

May 26th, 2014. Nutrient-rich whale poo may help to sustain fish stocks and promote productivity in ocean feeding grounds.

These findings from Flinders University, contradict the notion that whales compete with fisheries for marine resources by consuming a large amount of prey.

“We found that blue whales essentially fertilise their own feeding grounds with the nutrients needed to sustain the growth of their krill prey,” said Trish Lavery, who worked on the study
