June 4th, 2015. Six whales thought to be part of the same group that got into difficulty on Skye earlier this week have turned up close to the island again.

British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) said it was monitoring the long-finned pilot whales.

It said the animals did not appear to be at any risk at the moment, but the tide will be falling at the undisclosed location later on Thursday.

Eight whales of the group of 21 that stranded on Monday and Tuesday died.

The animals had first beached at Staffin on Monday afternoon.

Most of the whales were saved but 10 then went on to strand themselves on rocks on nearby Staffin Island.

A total of 21 long-finned pilot whales beached on Staffin Island off the northern coast of the Isle of Skye overnight and three died before rescuers came to their aid and re-floated them. A further six have now died

After rescuers re-floated the animals, at least 13 decided to beach themselves on the rocks again. However, six have since died – including a pregnant whale – and attempts are underway to save the remaining seven.

There is a lot of seismic surveys in the area. Activities of the Royal Navy and Qinetiq, who pollute the Inner Sound with loud noise from active sonar and munitions testing could be involved in the mass stranding. But what about the protocol of gas sampling ?

Of the 21 whales which beached on Tuesday, four died and three more were euthanised.
