June 11th, 2014 (Calla Wahlquist). SOUTH West swimmers have been warned to stay well away from a rotting humpback whale carcass that is attracting sharks near Bunbury.

The 10-metre long dead whale was reported on Buffalo Beach near Australind on Sunday.

At least one shark has been spotted swimming around the carcass and sharks are expected to remain in the area until the carcass deteriorates or is removed.

A spokeswoman from the Department of Parks and Wildlife said the beach was remote and only accessible via four-wheel drive.

She said the department was considering its options in removing the humpback carcass from the beach.
